Day 5 Wednesday 9th June 2010

The ferry gives way to a magnificent bridge over the Zambezi. It strikes us as we pass through villages that they are all bereft of the plastic bag flowers which adorn the South African villages - probably as there are no supermarkets close to hand.

The Caia bridge

so near and yet so far... perhaps Gavin can pull us across!

What should have been a short ferry ride over the Shire River to Mango Camp at Pinda was not to be. We were greeted by the locals and advised by the "ferry spokesman" that the owner had gone to town to get a new cable and were assured that the ferry would be operating the following morning. Although sceptical we gave them the benefit of the doubt and undertook to return in the morning.

We then backtracked to our overnight stop - "camp @ my house" which was once a well established farm with canalled water, large farmhouse, extensive outbuildings and hot springs all of which are now derelict. We were met by the caretaker who was probably an employee of the owner (now long gone). After negotiation the camping fee was agreed which was fairly high considering that there were no facilities at all but it was close to the ferry and nightfall was fast approaching. We managed to became blood relations to all the resident mosquitoes.
